We entered with the largest army with 1,400,000 but did not figure this was going to be enough so we started to expand. When that was done and over with we had over 5 million soldiers total. When General Sukjominov had to appoint a commander in chief he decided against putting in Tsar Nicholas, who wanted to lead the Russian Army into battle and put his own uncle the Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich in that position. This was not a bad decision but who is to say he is going to be as motivated as Tsar would have been? The Russian army was led into attack against Germany in August. Russia was the one that initiated it and it was the first offensive attack that they had made so far in the war. The first set of troops went into the heart of East Persia and the second went to cut off the Eighth army’s retreat. They won their first offensive battle and truly began there part in the war.
